'Paranormal Activity 2' teaser trailer hits the internet with possessed Katie possibly returning

'Paranormal Activity 2' teaser trailer hits the internet with possessed Katie possibly returning

Heeere's Katie! Maybe.
The haunted woman from "Paranormal Activity" appears to be back in the teaser for the sequel to the low-budget horror smash -- and she is not happy.
In the one-minute trailer, Katie (Katie Featherston), who disappeared at the end of the original, stands in a doorway to her bathroom looking possessed.
"In 2009 you demanded it," the credits read. "Nothing can prepare you for what's next."
The action takes place in a suburban house that looks a lot like the San Diego, CA, home in the original. But this time the haunted couple has a baby and a feisty dog who growls when he hears footsteps off camera.
From the little we can go on, it seems as though Katie has been unable to shake the demon that has been haunting her since her youth.
In the first film, she ended up killing her husband, Micah (Micah Sloat), after the couple experienced strange goings on in their house, which they recorded on night vision cameras. At the end of the movie, her whereabouts are unaccounted for.
"Paranormal Activity" was Oren Peli's first feature and became one of the most profitable films ever made. It was reportedly shot on a budget of $15,000 and went on to earn over $100 million at the box office.
According to imdb.com, Tod Williams is directing the sequel, while Peli returns as producer.
"Paranormal Activity 2" is slated for release in October.

Cold War support for Russian "spies" on networking site

Cold War support for Russian "spies" on networking site

(Reuters) - Patriotic, anti-American messages adorn the pages of two alleged Russian spies on Russia's answer to Facebook, a reminder of historic suspicions and resentments that have survived the end of the Cold War.
ipad  |  Technology  |  Media
"Russia will never abandon you!" is the repeated message on the pages of Mikhail Semenko and Anna Chapman, arrested in the United States on suspicion of being part of a Russian spy ring. Over 100 people left similar messages of support on the Russian language social netowrking site odnoklassniki.ru on Wednesday.
"Hang on in there Misha (Mikhail)... Everyone knows this is an American witch-hunt," one surfer posted on Semenko's page, referring to U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communist investigations at the height of the Cold War.
The U.S. arrests earlier this week of 10 alleged spies and tales of secret meetings, invisible ink and secret handovers, have been splashed over the front pages of U.S. media.
Russia has angrily rejected the allegations but later said ties between the Cold War foes would not be damaged.
Semenko's page says he is 27 and last visited on May 24. In his profile picture, the floppy-haired smiling Russian poses in front of the White House in Washington.
"Those yanks really know how to freak people out," another surfer wrote in one of many comments slamming Americans and protesting the innocence of those arrested.
People ranging from teenage boys to female pensioners posted the comments.
Chapman, who Russian media say is actually called Kushchenko, last visited the site on June 20. The 28-year-old's photo shows her casting a sideways glance, clad in a bright blue bustier and with flowing brown hair.
One of her many female supporters wrote: "Soon Anna will return home... Enormous respect is due to Anna. A book will be written about her and a film made."
The spy ring is accused of gathering information ranging from data on high-penetration nuclear warhead research programs to background on CIA applicants for the Russian government.

Portugal Vetoes PT Vivo Stake Sale To Telefonica

By Jeffrey T. Lewis Contributing to DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
LISBON (Dow Jones)--The Portuguese government Wednesday vetoed a EUR7.15 billion bid from Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF) to buy Portugal Telecom SGPS S/A's (PT) indirect stake in Brazil's Vivo Participacioes SA (VIV) despite the approval of PT shareholders for the transaction.
The veto, through the use of a golden share, comes after Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates said in Parliament last week that Portugal's strategic interest was linked to the dimension and economic scale of PT.
PT and Telefonica have been locked in a power struggle over Vivo, which the two Iberian telecoms control through a 50-50 joint venture in the investment vehicle Brasilcel, which in turn owns 60% of the Brazilian mobile phone company.
Both companies see Vivo as key to their future growth prospects.
The government veto also takes place just before the European Court of Justice is expected to rule next week on the legality of Portugal's golden share in PT, designed to prevent a hostile takeover.
European authorities claim Portugal's ownership of such a golden share breaches the principle of the free movement of capital. An official from Socrates' office couldn't immediately comment on the veto.
A Telefonica spokeswoman said 74% of PT shareholders had voted in favor of the Spanish company's offer at an extraordinary general meeting. She declined to comment on what the government's veto will mean for Telefonica's strategy.
"We have to study the decision first," the spokeswoman added.
Telefonica late Tuesday improved its offer for PT's half of Brasilcel for the second time. The Spanish company's first bid of EUR5.7 billion was swiftly rejected by PT's board last month. It then raised the offer to EUR6.5 billion.

Is 'The Last Airbender' the next great Hollywood franchise?

Is 'The Last Airbender' the next great Hollywood franchise?

When you've played a 200-year-old vampire in "Twilight," settling for ordinary isn't that easy.
"The undead have been very good to me and my career. But I was ready for something different," says Jackson Rathbone, 25, best known as Twilight's serious vampire, Jasper Hale.
Rathbone got his wish in the new fantasy-adventure, "The Last Airbender."
Based on Nickelodeon's animated TV series, which aired from 2005 to 2008, this action-packed epic directed by M. Night Shyamalan casts Rathbone as the daring young warrior, Sokko.
Together with his sister Katara ("Deck the Halls'" Nicola Peltz) and a reluctant young hero named Aang (newcomer Noah Ringer), the trio set off on a perilous journey to save the world and restore harmony in the four realms of Earth, Fire, Water and Air.
"For me, this was a great chance to show my range as an actor," Rathbone told CTV.ca.
"Sokko isn't slapstick funny. He's very realistic. But he's a rebel. He's got many layers to him," he says.
The same is true of Katara, says 15-year-old Peltz.
"I loved the fact that this girl can kick ass. But she's loyal. She's tender. She's more complex and empowering than meets the eye," Peltz told CTV.ca.
These sibling adventurers are also kung fu aces, just like all those in this mythical Asian universe known as Waterbenders, Earthbenders, Firebenders and Airbenders.
Soon after Rathbone and Petz signed on, they headed to training boot camp on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles.
"Nicola is badass," laughs Jackson. "Nothing hurts her. But I was horrified and embarrassed by how truly awful I was when we started training."
Audiences could never tell. On screen, gravity-defying manoeuvres are everyone's forte here.
But it remains to be seen if Shyamalan new foray into 3-D adventure films will outshine his previous work.
"The Last Airbender" marks a sharp departure for Shyamalan, whose eerie 1999 blockbuster "The Sixth Sense" shot the 39-year-old director to fame and fortune.
Shyamalan settled on "Last Airbender" after watching the Nickelodeon series on DVD with his then-7-year-old daughter. The young girl was taken with the "empowered" female character, Katara.
Shyamalan's move was a risky one, but not entirely surprising.
After a string of critical and commercial disappointments like "The Happening" and "Lady in the Water," Shyamalan needed a comeback.
With "The Last Airbender," Shyamalan took square aim at children, families and what could be Hollywood's next big franchise.
"I know Night envisions ‘Last Airbender' as a trilogy," says Rathbone. "We'll have to wait and see how audiences respond."
The financial stakes are certainly high.
With a production cost of US$150 million and a marketing budget of US$130-million, "The Last Airbender" is more than twice as expensive as any of Shyamalan's previous eight films.
The film has also earned some early criticism for casting white actors in the roles of Asian action heroes.
But if "Last Airbender" succeeds, it will be for one reason alone says Rathbone.
"Right from the start, I thought of this film along the lines of ‘Star Wars" and ‘Lord of the Rings,'" says Rathbone.
"It's big. It's got tons of action and great special effects. But it's got heart," he says. "That's the real magic that makes this film fly."

iPhone on Verizon: 5 Reasons to Doubt the Latest Rumors

iPhone on Verizon: 5 Reasons to Doubt the Latest Rumors

Just when you thought it was over, the iPhone on Verizon rumor is back...this time with a claim the iPhone is coming to Verizon in January 2011. The fresh report comes courtesy of Bloomberg news, which cites two sources "familiar with the plans." This is odd timing for a new iPhone-Verizon rumor considering that Apple just announced the iPhone 4 had the most successful product launch in Apple's history, and Verizon just made a big deal over the upcoming launch of the Android-based Droid X. Why dampen customer enthusiasm for either device with a tired, old rumor that just refuses to die?
That's just one of the many reasons, I'm wondering, yet again, how much truth there is to this reason. Here's another five things to consider before buying this rumor for the umpteenth time.
That Pesky Exclusivity Contract
Engadget recently dug up a court document where Apple appears to admit that it has a five-year exclusivity contract with AT&T for the iPhone expiring in 2012, not 2011. Yes, as has been noted before, AT&T's exclusivity contract could have been amended to shorten the deal in the wake of AT&T's well-publicized service issues. But outcry over AT&T is nothing new, and didn't Apple further cement its relationship with AT&T earlier this year by partnering with the carrier for iPad data connectivity? If Apple is overly concerned about AT&T service, it has a funny way of showing it.
Rumor Recycle
Some believe this latest rumor has a little more believability to it since it's coming from Bloomberg news, but let's not forget that "iPhone on Verizon" is the rumor that just won't die. My colleague JR Raphael took a look back at the history of this rumor and came up with eight significant milestones for claims about the iPhone coming to Verizon.
Yes, it's true that many pieces of tech news have started out as never ending rumors only to become fact much later on, the iPhone and iPad being two of them. But every time the iPhone on Verizon rumor turns up, people just want to believe no matter what.
Sales Are Just Fine, Thank You Very Much
Earlier this week, Apple reported that it had sold over 1.7 million iPhone 4 devices in the first three days of the new iPhone's launch. Apple also said it was the most successful product launch in the company's history, making it bigger than the iPad, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. There is also some data to suggest that many of the millions of customers lining up to get the iPhone 4 on launch weekend were overwhelmingly AT&T iPhone customers looking to upgrade.
So if there's truly customer dissatisfaction with AT&T,why are there so many repeat customers?

Technology
The other problem is that, despite earlier rumors of a September launch, an iPhone compatible with Verizon's network has yet to appear. Unlike AT&T, which uses the global GSM standard, Verizon uses CDMA cellular technology requiring slightly different components than the GSM-based iPhone.
What's more likely is that a Verizon iPhone would show up once Verizon has transitioned to its fourth generation LTE network, the same next-generation cellular technology AT&T is developing. In fact, Verizon's CEO Ivan Seidenberg said as much in April 2009.
Verizon plans on having its LTE network up and running in 25 to 30 U.S. markets later this year covering about 100 million people. But if Verizon's updated network requires an equally updated iPhone, we may be waiting until at least summer 2011 before we see the iPhone on Verizon.
Android
Verizon is spending a lot of time getting cozy with Google's Android platform these days. The two companies, along with Adobe and Motorola, just launched the Droid X, the latest iteration of the most popular Android handset. There are also persistent rumors that a follow up to the original Droid--Droid 2--is coming in August.
Of course, Android handsets on Verizon don't preclude the possibility of a Verizon iPhone, but Verizon has a great smartphone partner in Google. The search giant recently boasted it was seeing an average of 160,000 Android activations every day (the equivalent of almost three iPhone 4 launches a month), and a new and better Android device shows up every few weeks. Verizon may like to have the iPhone too, but right now it doesn't appear to be in a rush to get it.
The iPhone probably can't remain an AT&T exclusive forever, but neither Apple, AT&T, or Verizon look like they're in a rush to change the current status quo.

Gregg Allman Undergoes Successful Liver Transplant In Florida

It is being reported that Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Famer Gregg Allman has underwent a successful liver transplant in Florida.
The procedure was carried out yesterday at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, after the rocker was put on the liver transplant list back in 2007 after he began undergoing treatments for hepatitis C.
Allman got the phone call he had been waiting for yesterday morning, and drove to the hospital to undergo the procedure which went off without a hitch but he will remain in hospital for up to a week.
“He’s psyched to put this time of his life behind him and have a chance again to feel really healthy and good, and hopefully live for many more years to
come,” said his manager Michael Lehman.
“I changed my ways years ago, but we can’t turn back time,” Allman said in a news release. “Every day is a gift, and I can’t wait to get back on the road making music with my friends.”

Shame on The Sun for giving Abramoff attention

So, what we have here is Jack Abramoff, the disgraced convicted felon going from lying and cheating to selling pizza ("Jack Abramoff's new job: selling pizza, not influence," June 23). Now who say's crime doesn't pay? From $750 per hour to around $10 per is quite a fall from grace, or should I say disgrace.
Shame on the Baltimore Sun and Jean Marbella for even acknowledging this corrupt individual. Here is a man who defrauded thousands and ruined thousands more lives, and now he is paraded like a celebrity.
Yes, crime does pay, what did he do for all his evil? Barely served four years from an original disgracefully light seven year sentence. Poor Jack. His employer, Tov pizza's Ron Rosenbluth, says "Everyone deserves a second chance." Uh huh, just like the thousands of petty and not so petty thieves who are released into the streets each year with determination to make a good life only to find there are no pizza joints available to them for work or that they never learned a skill while in the prison?
Jack Abramoff received special treatment in and now out of prison. His release to a halfway house was quicker than a rabbit running a race. I am disgusted by what appears to be a classic case of cronyism. Oh, and look at the exposure and new business that will be generated by Rosenbluth's Tov pizzeria. Do I hear Cha-ching? What's next, Jean Marbella and the Sunpaper doing a piece on Bernie Madoff waiting tables upon his release because of health problems?

iPhone 4 Problems: iPhone 4 Flaws, iPhone 4 Glitches and iPhone 4 Antenna

iPhone 4 Problems: iPhone 4 Flaws, iPhone 4 Glitches and iPhone 4 Antenna - iPhone 4's bottom-left corner isn't playing nice with your skin. If you recall from the keynote, that's where the Bluetooth / WiFi / GPS antenna meets its GSM / UMTS counterpart. So engt decided to test on two brand new iPhone 4 handsets purchased today in the UK.

One iPhone 4 demonstrated the issue everytime it was held in our left hand so that our palm was essentially bridging the two antennas. Bridging the two with a finger tip, however, didn't cause any issues with the reported reception.

The iPhone 4 is redesigned from prior models, with a better display, a glass front and back, and a stainless-steel frame that doubles as an antenna. Since it became available for preorders on June 15, it has been in such demand that AT&T Inc.,

Apple's exclusive U.S. wireless carrier, was forced to halt preorders. AT&T said preorder volumes were 10 times higher than for the iPhone 3GS last year.

Does Obama Read The Weekly Standard?

Yesterday, the Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol has proposed attractive alternative to General McChrystal:

If the General McChrystal did step back, maybe there is a very powerful generals who might replace. The following suggestions are not conventional, though: Ask General David Petraeus CENTCOM resigned his post and took over command of the war in Afghanistan.
Today, we see that Barack Obama has taken notice:

Obama announced Wednesday he has accepted the resignation of General Stanley McChrystal as commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and appointed General David Petraeus to replace him, following a scathing article in which he and his employees have been cited for criticizing the government.
Although this may be a coincidence (although if I Kristol, I'll take credit for it) the irony of choosing a favorite neocons military leaders will not be lost on most of Obama's supporters left.
Please note that only three years ago, MoveOn.org took out full-page ad in The New York Times titled "General Petraeus or general betray us." Only one year before the group had supported Obama. I wonder if they feel a little betrayed by the news.

Carp-Pocalypse: The Great Lakes Asian Carp Invasion Begins? Read more: http://newsfeed.time.com/2010/06/24/carp-pocalypse-the-great-lakes-asian-carp-invasion-begins/#ixzz0rmqZw6zH

There’s an underwater war underway in the Midwest – an offensive to keep the ravenous Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes. On Wednesday, it became clear: The carp are winning. (via AP)
Late Wednesday night, the Associated Press reported that federal officials have, for the first time ever, discovered a carp swimming beyond the multiple electric barriers that were erected along the Chicago waterways to keep the fish out of the Great Lakes system. A 20-pound bighead carp was caught by a fisherman in Illinois’s Lake Calumet, on the South Side of Chicago.
That’s beyond the electric fence, and only six miles from Lake Michigan.
For decades, the carp have been making their way up the Mississippi, and then through Illinois rivers and canals that form an artificial link between the Mississippi Basin and the Great Lakes. The problems with this migration stem from the fact that the carp can grow into 4-foot-long, 100-pound monsters who devour 40 percent of their body weight daily. They destroy ecosystems by gorging themselves, and starving out other species.
Plenty of people seemed surprised by Wednesday’s news; a little less clear was now what was to be done next.
The Army Corps of engineers is studying alternatives to the current electric barriers, but it says it will take years to complete the analysis. Meanwhile others like Joel Brammeier, president of the Alliance for the Great Lakes, is demanding that the connections between the river systems and the Great Lakes be closed permanently.

England's World Cup camp was in total disarray a few days ago, with the old guard leadership of the team calling into question Fabio Capello's management style. Namely, the team felt they were too cooped up at their training camp and needed something to take the edge off a bit.

Enter beer.
Fabio Capello's desperation to reinvigorate England's faltering World Cup campaign prompted the Italian to relax his alcohol ban on the eve of today's critical tie against Slovenia, allowing his players to enjoy a beer to calm their pre-match nerves. "They were allowed to drink beer before the game, you can ask them," said Capello. "It's true. I changed something and used my imagination."
The offer came in response to John Terry's plea during a press conference earlier in the week asking for a little bit less pressure from Capello and his staff. In addition to playing Joe Cole – which Capello did after Wayne Rooney pulled up lame with a minor ankle injury – Capello did offer the squad the release they were seeking. The Guardian report indicates that it was "unclear" whether the players took Capello up on the offer. Yet The Sun reports that some of them did, in fact, imbibe before the biggest must-win match in England's recent World Cup history.
The wily coach - accused of being too strict - eased his rules to help the stars relax. He invited Rooney, Gerrard & Co to join him for a cold lager at the team hotel. Ex-skipper John Terry was among the players thought to have taken up the offer - days after he suggested the team was too wound up. And the Chelsea ace was on top form against Slovenia, making a string of crucial tackles.
Midfielder Frank Lampard revealed most players were wary of Capello's treat. And he said: "You don't have ten beers - you just have one."
I don't know about you, but I would love to see them play after having ten beers. Hey, maybe that's what France did.

Christopher 'Dudus' Coke: profile

Christopher "Dudus" Coke, who was captured in Jamaica after eluding a month-long assault, is accused of running a violent drug cartel but is revered in some slums as a modern-day Robin Hood.

The son of one of the Caribbean island's most legendary dons, Coke built his own name as a businessman, a political player - and chief of the "Shower Posse," a group named not for cleanliness but for showering bullets on foes.
Coke's gang effectively controlled Tivoli Gardens, a ramshackle part of western Kingston where he created a mini-economy providing both livelihoods and protection to residents desperately seeking both.

"They see him as a Robin Hood or even a Jesus - someone who stands up for them and is willing to die for them, even if he is an evil Messiah," said the Reverend Earlmont Williams, the pastor of a local church.
"The Jamaican people are very religious and also creative. We tend to combine different religious practices and theologies," he said.
The Shower Posse and other gangs' reach extended well into mainstream Kingston. Businesses quietly paid money to ensure safety and some politicians enlisted self-described thugs to drum up votes when elections rolled around.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding himself represents Tivoli Gardens, where the Shower Posse supported the ruling Jamaica Labour Party.
But after months of hesitation, Mr Golding unleashed the offensive to capture Coke that left at least 73 dead - raising hopes among many Jamaicans that the island's nexus between politics and gangs has finally been broken.
As Jamaica's elite soured on the underworld in the 1980s, the Shower Posse allegedly found a more stable source of cash - drugs and guns.
While cartels from Colombia, Mexico and Panama have focused on the western United States, the Shower Posse allegedly led a ring funnelling cocaine from South America to the US east coast.
US prosecutors in August put out an indictment for Coke, accusing the Shower Posse of supplying much of the cocaine in New York. If convicted, he faces life in a US prison and millions of dollars in penalties.
Criminal investigators estimate that the Shower Posse is responsible for thousands of deaths since the 1990s as they battled to secure the flow of drugs and guns.
"They were really at the cusp of the burgeoning crack-cocaine trade in the early '80s in the US and Canada," said Michael Chettleburgh, a Canadian expert on crime and author of "Young Thugs: Inside the Dangerous World of Canadian Street Gangs."
"And they had really good timing because they had begun to snap from the leash of their political masters," he said.
Unlike brash gang leaders who flaunt their wealth, Coke took a comparatively low-key approach. Little footage of him exists. Even at the small restaurants and guesthouses on his home turf of Tivoli Gardens, some residents say they would not recognize him if he walked in.
In defying arrest, he may have been trying to avoid the fate of his father, Jim Brown, who died in 1992 in a mysterious fire after being taken into custody.
Some Jamaicans are convinced that Jim Brown was killed because he knew too much. But he has not been forgotten in Tivoli Gardens where large portraits of him remain on the walls, some with the inscription, "Jim Brown - One Man Against the World."

Argentina, South Korea Move to World Cup Round of 16 With Mexico, Uruguay

Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico and South Korea advanced to the round of 16 at the World Cup yesterday as host South Africa was eliminated.
Argentina beat Greece 2-0 and South Korea tied Nigeria 2-2 to progress from Group B. Uruguay defeated Mexico 1-0, sending both through from Group A, while South Africa beat 10-man France 2-1 in the final game for both teams.
“I think we’re really showing what we’re capable of,” Argentina coach Diego Maradona told reporters. “We are doing our duty, we are defending the colors of Argentina, as we’ve done all our lives,”
The top two teams from each of the eight groups qualify for the second round.
Martin Demichelis and Martin Palermo scored in the final 13 minutes in Polokwane to give Argentina its third straight victory. Argentina will play Mexico in its next game on June 27.
“Argentina were clearly superior,” Greece coach Otto Rehhagel told reporters. “They were the better team and this was a deserved win for Argentina.”
Argentina finished with 9 points in Group B. South Korea had four, Greece three and Nigeria one.
Lee Jung Soo and Park Chu Young scored in Durban for South Korea, which meets Uruguay on June 26.
Nigeria took the lead in the 12th minute on a goal by Kalu Uche and Lee tied the game seven minutes before halftime. Park scored with a free kick early in the second half to give South Korea a 2-1 lead.
Nigeria’s Ayegbeni Yakubu missed a wide-open goal from three yards out in the 67th minute, then scored two minutes later from the penalty spot.
Suarez Strikes
Luis Suarez scored with a header in the 43rd minute in Rustenburg as Uruguay beat Mexico to top Group A with seven points. South Africa tied Mexico with four points, but lost out on second place on an inferior goal difference.
“If you look at the history of Uruguay over the last few World Cups it means I’m really satisfied,” coach Oscar Tabarez said at a news conference after Uruguay reached the round of 16 for the first time since 1990.
France, the 2006 runner-up to Italy, ended its tumultuous World Cup in last place with one point from the three group games.
“The first word that comes to mind is sadness,” Raymond Domenech, who coached his final game for France yesterday, said at a news conference. “Sadness for all the supporters and sadness for the players.”
South Africa’s victory wasn’t enough to prevent it becoming the first World Cup host ousted in the initial group stage. Mexico finished with a goal difference of plus-1, while South Africa was minus-2.
Red Card
“We always believed it was possible to qualify,” South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar told reporters. “People can’t say that we didn’t give it our best.”
Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela scored for South Africa. Yoann Gourcuff was red-carded in the 25th minute for France after elbowing MacBeth Sibaya as the two jumped for the ball.
Florent Malouda scored in the 70th minute for France, which was playing its first game since striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home for insulting Domenech at halftime of its 2-0 loss to Mexico on June 17.
The team refused to train three days ago in protest of the French Football Federation’s decision to expel Anelka. Domenech, who said he supported the dismissal, benched captain Patrice Evra yesterday and gave the post to Alou Diarra.
The Netherlands in Group E and Brazil in Group G have already qualified for the next round with one group game remaining.
Slovenia faces England and the U.S. plays Algeria today in Group C. In Group D, Ghana meets Germany and Australia plays Serbia.
Teams are ranked in each group by points from group matches, followed by goal difference and goals scored in all group matches. Ultimately, world governing body FIFA can decide which team moves on by drawing lots.

High School hosts Cornerstone Dedication

The cornerstone dedication was held for the new high school and was an important step toward rebuilding the high school. The cornerstone ceremony was held in conjunction with an open house for the new middle school cafeteria. Speakers included Caruthersville Mayer Diane Sayre, State Rep. Terry Swinger, school board president Lee Bethune, superintendent J. J. Bullington, and assistant superintendent Ron Stutzman.
Also participating in the program was Logan Meeks, vice president of A3H (Askew, Hargraves, Harcourt) architect of the new school. Meeks is a 1993 graduate of Caruthersville High School.
The new high school will be a 90,000 square foot campus, and will include a two-story educational building, auditorium, an art and family consumer science building, and the renovation of the existing music building. The facility will accommodate 500 students in grades 9-12. The construction will incorporate all current building codes, including stringent seismic criteria as well as elements of an environmentally "green" building.
The old school will not be forgotten. The construction will include terra cotta elements that were preserved from the original school. The west entrance will be reconstructed to the original 1924 building.
The new school will actually include two cornerstones - one from the original 1924-era building and a new one. The new cornerstone will include a time capsule that will bring together the past, present and future.
The new cornerstone will include all of the items found in the 1924 cornerstone as well as contemporary items. A list of all CHS graduates from 1924 to the present will be added to the cornerstone, as well as a cell phone and an I-Pod.
"They say patience is a virtue," said Swinger. "I commend the school board for their patience while waiting for government agencies to make the right decisions. When it was obvious that the insurance company was not going to adequately meet their obligation, which had an effect on FEMA and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) funds, the General Assembly also stepped up to help our school."
Swinger noted that in 2008 the Missouri General Assembly passed Senate Bill 1170 that created the Rebuild Missouri Schools Program. The legislation gives school districts that have suffered destruction from tornado, fire or flood a no-interest loan to rebuild through the State Board of Education
"Supt. J.J. Bullington, School Board President Baughn Merideth and City Attorney Lawrence Dorroh were instrumental in helping draft the language of the bill," Swinger said.
Swinger noted that a good atmosphere is an important component in education.
"These past few years, it has been a challenge for our teachers to maintain a good atmosphere while teaching in FEMA trailers but they did it; it can only get better," he said.
The new school is scheduled to be completed in the fall/winter of 2010. A copy of the design of the new school facility can be viewed at the school district's website at 222.caruthersville.k12.mo.us

Gypsy Rose Lee, American burlesque entertainer

Gypsy Rose Lee, American burlesque entertainer

Gypsy Rose Lee was an American burlesque entertainer, famous for her striptease act. She was also an actress, author and playwright, whose 1957 memoir was made into the stage musical and film Gypsy.

Gypsy Rose Lee was born Rose Louise Hovick in Seattle, Washington in 1911, although her mother later shaved three years off both of her daughters' ages. She was initially known by her middle name, Louise. Her mother, Rose Hovick (née Rose Evangeline Thompson), was a teenaged bride fresh from a convent school when she married Norwegian-American John Olaf Hovick, who was a newspaper advertising salesman and a reporter at the The Seattle Times. Louise's sister, Ellen Evangeline Hovick (better known as actress June Havoc), was born in 1913.

After their parents divorced, the girls supported the family by appearing in vaudeville where June's talent shone, while Louise remained in the background. At the age of 15 in December 1928, June eloped with Bobby Reed, a dancer in the act, much to her mother's displeasure, going on to a brief career in marathon dancing, which was more remunerative than tap dancing at the time.

Real Housewives of New Jersey-Albie Manzo's Law School Dilemma

So the most recent episode of Real Housewives of New Jersey featured some touching moments. Dina is no longer filming on the show, as she left to focus on her family and cats, and to no longer be caught up in Danielle Staub drama.

Caroline's family is definitely maturing. All the kids are doing something with their lives or at least trying to do something. Caroline's daughter is at cosmetology school (I think she graduated on this episode, they had a celebratory dinner for some reason) studying make up and shows interest in Avant garde make up application. Also Christopher is working at the family business, the Brownstone, and Albie is in law school.

The most recent issue with Albie, Caroline's eldest son who is 23 years old. He has a learning disability--not really specified, but it takes him longer to read and grasp certain ideas. His first semester at law school was difficult and he found himself to be in trouble academically. His GPA is currently not where the school or he would like it to be and his continuance with this particular law school is contingent on the results of his appeal. It's really hard to watch someone who is like the apple of the family's eye, try so hard at doing something they want to do, and for them to not be able to do it because of a learning disability. I completely agree with Caroline when she said: "Don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do." The conversation and exchange between Caroline and her son was so sincere and heartfelt. It really demonstrates a mother's love and how much it pains a mother to see any of her children be hurt or not be able to do want they want in their lives. It reminded me of many chats I had with my own mother.

I was glad I was able to watch the show this week for this moment. I don't care too much for Danielle and her reconstructive plastic surgery or her other drama, but I guess she's glad now her breasts are no longer deformed.

What do you think of Caroline's family?

What are your thoughts on Albies situation in law school? Any suggestions?

Roger Federer escapes major upset at Wimbledon By HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)

Roger Federer escapes major upset at Wimbledon

By HOWARD FENDRICH (AP) – 4 hours ago

WIMBLEDON, England — The situation was so unfamiliar to Roger Federer, so "uncomfortable," to use his term. On a surface he rules, at a tournament he owns, against an opponent he dominates, Federer found himself in serious trouble Monday: He dropped the first two sets against 60th-ranked Alejandro Falla of Colombia, then was a mere three points from losing in the first round of Wimbledon.

"I had Federer against the ropes," Falla would say later.

Eventually, the unheralded Falla succumbed to some jitters, and six-time Wimbledon champion Federer called upon his experience, summoned his customary excellence, overcame the daunting deficit and pulled away to win 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-0 in the event's opening Centre Court match.

"You definitely feel, you know, uncomfortable, because if you're used to being down the whole time, your whole life, it's something that's kind of normal. For me, it's not normal to be down two-sets-to-love, especially at Wimbledon and early on in Grand Slams. It's something I'm not quite used to," said the top-seeded Federer, who hampered himself with seven double-faults. "But still, I was able to find a way. That's most important right now. Doesn't matter how I felt out there. Didn't feel great, that's for sure."

Had Falla finished off Federer, it would have been one of the most stunning upsets in the history of tennis — perhaps THE most stunning, taking into account the participants, the setting and the round.

Not sure? Consider the players' resumes entering the day:

_Federer was 92-13 for his career on grass, including 76-2 since 2003; Falla was 7-11.

_Federer was 51-5 for his career at Wimbledon, with those six championships and a record seven consecutive final appearances; Falla was 3-5 and never got past the second round at the All England Club.

_Federer was 199-28 with a record 16 titles in Grand Slam action and reached the final at 18 of the past 20 major tournaments; Falla was 11-14, only once making it as far as the third round at a Slam.

All of that is why this match was the talk of Day 1 at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament, with players gathering around televisions in the locker rooms to catch a glimpse.

"I don't think anyone expected it," said No. 5 Andy Roddick, a three-time Wimbledon runner-up who beat Rajeev Ram of Carmel, Ind., 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 later Monday. "Everyone was pretty surprised, especially when it became very, very real there in the latter stages."

Indeed, Falla's near-defeat of Federer generated much more buzz than any of the upsets that actually occurred.

The seeded men who exited were No. 11 Marin Cilic, No. 17 Ivan Ljubicic, No. 20 Stanislas Wawrinka and No. 30 Tommy Robredo. No. 3 Novak Djokovic, the 2008 Australian Open champion, appeared on his way to joining them, but he came back to beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium 4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a match that finished at about 11 p.m., with the Centre Court roof closed and the lights on.

There was one surprise of significance in the women's draw: No. 5-seeded Francesca Schiavone lost 6-7 (0), 7-5, 6-1 to 47th-ranked Vera Dushevina of Russia, making Schiavone only the second reigning French Open women's champion to lose in the first round at Wimbledon in the 42-year Open era.

"I didn't have a lot of energy today," said Schiavone, who became Italy's first female Grand Slam champion two weeks and two days ago. "It was very close, but she took advantage of her chances, and I didn't."

The only other time a French Open champ bowed out in her opening Wimbledon match was in 2005, when it happened to Justine Henin. The Belgian began a 20-month hiatus from tennis in 2008, and returned to Wimbledon for the first time in three years Monday, advancing with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.

Also returning: Kim Clijsters, who hadn't played at the All England Club since 2006. The two-time U.S. Open champion, away from the tour entirely for 2 1/2 years while getting married and having a daughter, had no problems in beating Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 6-0, 6-3.

Not surprisingly, Henin and Clijsters — neither of whom has won Wimbledon — were thrilled to be back.

"We breathe tennis, we live tennis, over here. You feel the tradition of the game," Henin said, then added: "Playing in white is a good feeling."

Venus Williams adhered to Wimbledon's strict dress code Monday, switching from the black lace outfit that drew so much attention at the French Open to more traditional attire.

"Here it's all about white," Williams said after eliminating Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay 6-3, 6-2. "There is no illusion this time. My dress was inspired by Tina Turner. ... It's just a fun, elegant dress."

Her bid for a sixth Wimbledon championship got off to a much more straightforward start than Federer's quest for a record-tying seventh.

Only twice in the Open era has the defending Wimbledon champion lost in the first round, but Federer appeared to be heading in that direction against the left-handed Falla. Here's one additional reason why the tightness of their match caught everyone off-guard: These guys met four times previously, and Federer won each time, taking all 11 sets.

Thanks to the luck — or, from Falla's perspective, the bad luck — of the draw, they were playing each other for the third time in the past four weeks.

"Everybody wants to play Federer," Falla said, then broke into a wide grin before delivering the laugh line: "But three times in one month is a lot."

In this case, familiarity did not breed contempt, but rather confidence. Falla felt he had a pretty good idea of what to expect, even sketching out something of a game plan for success against Federer, saying it was vital to go for it on returns, particularly on second serves, and to be aggressive by moving to the net whenever possible. Falla did all of that quite well for long stretches, backing up his strong serving and booming groundstrokes off both wings.

Also, Falla realized he was having a hard time dealing with Federer's sliced backhands in their recent encounters. To better prepare for that, Falla practiced with Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine, who won a grass-court tuneup event in the Netherlands last week and often slices the ball.

Asked if all of the recent time on court together might have helped Falla on Monday, Federer grinned and joked, "It shouldn't have. ... He should have known that I was going to beat him. But he forgot."

There were two pivotal moments Monday.

Serving at 4-4, love-40 in the third set, Federer faced three consecutive break points — had Falla won any of those, he would have served for the match in the next game. Instead, Federer won all three, erased a fourth break point later en route to holding serve, then broke in the next game for the first time all match to take the set.

And then, at 5-4 in the fourth, Falla served for the match.

"A big chance," said Falla, whose left leg was massaged by a trainer during third-set changeovers.

So close to a breakthrough result, the 26-year-old Falla admitted he doubted himself a bit, and he could get no closer than three points from victory — at 15-30 and 30-40. On the last, Federer ripped a big forehand that forced an error by Falla to make it 5-all. Federer roared, as did the crowd, and that pretty much was that.

When Federer delivered a groundstroke winner to end the tiebreaker, then broke Falla's serve to open the fifth set, order was restored.

"Definitely got lucky," Federer acknowledged. "But that's how it goes sometimes."

Around 50 killed in Congo train crash: source

BRAZZAVILLE - A train in Congo Republic derailed en route to the capital Brazzaville, killing around 50 passengers as four of its wagons plunged into a ravine by the track, a national rail company source told Reuters on Tuesday.

The accident happened late on Monday night after the train left the coastal town of Pointe-Noire on the Chemin de Fer Congo Ocean (CFCO) line, which has seen at least two serious accidents in recent years.

"Unfortunately the train took a corner that turned out to be fatal," said the rail company source, who declined to be identified because he was unauthorized to speak publicly.

UPDATE: China Yuan At New High For Modern Era After PBOC Move

By Joy C. Shaw

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Vs Parity Pvs USD/CNY Central Parity 6.8275 6.8275 USD/CNY OTC 0930 GMT 6.7976 -0.44% 6.8262 High 6.8272 0.00% Low 6.7958 -0.46%

SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--China's yuan surged to its highest level against the U.S. dollar in the modern era late Monday afternoon due to strong demand from both onshore and offshore traders following the central bank's weekend announcement that it would make its exchange-rate regime more flexible.

Traders said the market will closely monitor the People's Bank of China's daily dollar-yuan central parity rate for cues in the coming sessions. If the fixing remains close to Monday's 6.8275, reflecting the central bank's focus on stability, the dollar could rebound strongly Tuesday, they said.

On the over-the-counter market, the dollar was at CNY6.7976 around 0930 GMT Monday, down sharply from Friday's close of CNY6.8262, meaning the yuan appreciated 0.4% against the dollar.

The dollar traded between CNY6.7958--lower than its previous post-revaluation low of CNY6.8099 on Sept. 23, 2008--and CNY6.8272.

The yuan nominally had a higher exchange rate against the dollar in the 1980s, before the currency was allowed to be traded as part of China's market-oriented reforms.

Beijing fixed the yuan's value near 8.6 per dollar 1994, before pegging it again in 2001 in a very narrow range around 8.277 yuan per dollar. Under enormous political pressure from major trading partners, China's central bank revalued the yuan again in July 2005 and let it appreciate steadily against the dollar until mid 2008, when it halted the yuan's rise amid the global financial crisis.

Monday's session featured the most volatile trading in a year and a half, with the spread between the day's highest and lowest levels reaching CNY0.314, the widest since Dec. 3, 2008, when it was CNY0.343.

The PBOC said Saturday it will allow more flexibility in the yuan's exchange rate, a move widely seen as signaling the central bank will let the yuan resume a gradual rise against the dollar.

Early in the day, the over-the-counter spot dollar-yuan rate hovered near its closing level Friday after the PBOC kept the central parity rate at 6.8275, unchanged from Friday's level.

However, investors started having second thoughts about the PBOC's signal later in the day.

"At the beginning, the market was around the level of Friday's close. But the market is now turning to focus on the prospect of the yuan appreciating in the near term," said a Shanghai-based trader at a foreign bank.

Traders said demand for the yuan intensified in the onshore spot market in the mid-morning after someone posted offers to sell dollars below the market levels on the automatic price-matching system.

The price-matching system is a little-used anonymous trading platform that dealers believe the PBOC uses on occasion to signal its intentions to the market, while not officially showing its hand.

"There are some names selling in relatively low rates in the automatic price-matching system," said a Shanghai-based trader at a foreign bank.

A Shanghai-based trader at local bank said: "We think the central bank could be signaling widening market fluctuations through the system."

In the offshore market, one-year dollar-yuan nondeliverable forwards fell to 6.6370/6.6430, implying a 2.4% appreciation in the yuan against the dollar in one year, from 6.7050/6.7100 late Friday.
