Radio Stations in The Phoenix Area

Music is something we can agree on. Well, not so much our own tastes in music, but more that everyone listens to music. No matter what style of music you like you probably listen to it on a daily basis. Music is a huge part of our culture. People listen to it everywhere they go, such as in the car, waiting in line for something, at the office, or just relaxing at home.

The radio is a great place where you can listen to music you like as well as discover other bands or artists that you did not know about before. There are radio stations in almost every city. Phoenix is a great place for radio with plenty of choices. No matter what your taste in music is, Phoenix has the right station for you. Here are a few radio stations that Phoenix has organized according to music type.

Starting with the most popular type of music these days, with the top 40 hits. Phoenix has a couple of stations that you can get these hits 24 hours a day. KMVA, station 97.5 has all of these songs plus so much more. They not only play the top 40 hits from today, but they go beyond this a play hits from a few years ago and bring you new hits as well. 101.5, KZON, also plays the top 40 but stays more to the rhythmic top 40 with hip hop and R&B.

This also includes songs of this genre outside the top 40. One of the most popular radio stations in Phoenix for years has been 104.7 KISS FM. While sticking to the most popular of songs from this day this station has been a favorite for many years. Look no further for your top 40 hits than these stations.

For the rock and roll fans living in Phoenix, the radio does not forget about you either. If soft rock is your thing you should go toward 93.3 KDKB. This station tends to stay away from the metal or more hardcore rock to bring you soft rock from today and a short time ago. If you are the exact opposite and go for the metal and harder rock then Phoenix has this as well. Defined as "active rock" 97.9 KUPD has all of this plus more. They play harder rock than any other station in the valley but they also can tone it down and play some soft stuff as well. If you are into the indie scene or look for alternative rock then 103.9 KEDJ is the place you want to go. Also, for the classic rock lovers 100.7 KSLX is perfect.

One step away from rock and roll is country music, and Phoenix has a few stations for fans of the genre as well. 102.5 KNIX and 107.9 KMLE are both of the country stations in Phoenix. Both of these stations play generally the same music with country hits from today and yesterday.

As you can see, there is no shortage of radio stations in Phoenix. Along with those mentioned above, there are also stations for classical music, Christian music, and talk radio. The only way to find out what you like is to go through all of them.

Using a metronome with your rehearsing will improve your ability to to hit a regular beat and add better timing to your musical strengths. The speed of the boss metronome is changed to the personal choice of the musician. When learning a unfamiliar piece of music it is a good idea to turn the speed down until the music is mastered and all the notes are played with no errors or mistiming. When this is achieved the rhythm can be adjusted to whatever is felt to be the right tempo, maybe 4 to the bar or 2, whatever the band wants to be the perfect way to play the music to an audience and the best way to bring the musicians artistic skills across and to show themselves.

It will help you keep the beat throughout the music. It will make it easier for you to get to know the music faster so you can fall into the rhythm of the music

You will get a great feeling of the beat and vibe of the music. The music can be spoiled by an unsettling or imprecise count which causes wrong accents and the wrong count for the music. Using the korg metronome will help the music playing by finding the essential count of the music which gives it it's feel and life.

The korg metronome is a very handy electronic device that a musician can utilize to greatly enhance their musical gifts! There are a lot of ways that the korg metronome can really advance a musicians musical skills and mastery, the most important being it develops and develops confidence within the artist, especially for the beginner. Funk, Soul and Rhythm and Blues

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In 1970, a new strand of Rhythm and Blues (R&B) was hitting the airwaves, funk music. Rhythm and Blues artists like Little Richard, James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, and the Meters helped to pave the way to R&B Funk topping record charts and filling nightclubs with a funky new beat.

Psychedelic soul hit the music industry in the late 60's giving the R&Bs a blend of rock and soul with that had an upbeat tempo that one could move their feet to on the dance floor. It was the crack that led to the opening to funk and disco a few years later.

Funk music could be classified as a mixture of soul music with a dash of jazz, and R&B, with a strong rhythmic groove built from the electric bass, drums, and the electric guitar. They often have a strong horn section as well where the sax added the soul and the trumpets and trombone accented the rhythmic beats.

When taking a trip down funk music memory lane you can't help think back to the 70's artists such as Rufus feat, Chaka Khan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Eric Burdon & War, Tower of Power, Average White Band, The Commodores, and Kool & the Gang. The thing with funk music back in the 70's and still today is that no one band or artists was bound to just that one style of music. These same artist and many more also played other genres of music such as disco and rare soul music. Funk just opened the doors to new venues as well as new genres of music such as disco beats, hip hop, and go-go and punk music.

By the early 80's funk took on a bit more of a spin and became more sultry and sexual in content with the help of artists such as Prince. After all, the initial oncoming of funk was based off the idea of getting your groove on or sexual intercourse to be more direct. A song would start with a slow rhythmic groove working up to a harder, pounding, and more insistent and demanding rhythm.

The 80's also brought musical instrument changes to the traditional funk sounds with the exchange from live horn sections to synth keyboards, organs and pianos were replaced with electronic machines and synthesizers as well. Even the drums were replaced by electronics taking a good part of the show out of funk today. Lyrics that used to be innuendos of sexual content have become straight out obvious sexual content.

The late 80's and early 90's brought funk into yet another light as rock bands started incorporating funk sounds to their venue calling it funk rock or funk metal. However through all the changes of Funk R&B influences that earlier performs such as James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, The Meters, The Funk Brothers, and Bootsy Collins still remain.

The Best Hits of 90s Alternative Rock

Image : http://www.flickr.com

90s alternative rock offered some of the finest rock songs ever recorded by some of the greatest bands in history. The 80s saw the invention of melodic Modern Rock and a host of one hit wonder bands and pop groups but it was 90s alternative rock that took the genre to a whole new level. When exactly did modern rock become alternative rock? No one really knows but it lies somewhere between REM and U2 and their phenomenal rise to the top of the charts and their ability to crossover into other genres and radio play.

Green Day burst onto the music scene in 1994 with their hit album "Dookie" that featured such monster 90s alternative rock hits as "Basketcase" and "Welcome to Paradise". Green Day continues to wow audiences around the world to this day and their last album "21st Century Breakdown" was a huge success, both critically and financially.

U2 of course continues churning out huge hits and in the 90s they had their biggest and some would say best album ever with 1991's "Achtung Baby" which featured one of the greatest rock ballads of all time "One" as well as "The Sweetest Thing" and "Mysterious Ways."

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were one of the huge breakout bands of 90s alternative rock and their smash hit album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" went on to sell over 7 million copies in the U.S. alone. The big hit off the album was "Give it Away" and the video helped to secure their place in the total rock scene. They released "Californication" in 1998 and this became another in a long line of commercial successes for the Los Angeles based band.

In 1991 a Seattle grunge group named Nirvana burst onto the scene with the release of their album "Nevermind". The band enjoyed a huge international hit with the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and continued to enjoy success until the suicide of lead singer Curt Cobain. Drummer Dave Grohl went on to multi-platinum success as the lead singer and leader of The Foo Fighters.

Another huge 90s alternative rock music band was Pearl Jam and they also hailed from the Seattle grunge scene. Their debut album in 1991, "Ten" was an instant smash hit around the world. Songs like "Jeremy" and "I'm Still Alive" still get lots of airplay to this day and are considered rock icons. The band went on to record more albums in the 90s such as "Vs", "Vitalogy", "Yield", and "No Code", all of which were huge hits. Pearl Jam has proven time after time to be one of the most enduring and loved bands ever to hit the stage.

Other great bands of 90s alternative rock fame were R.E.M. with their big hit "Losing My Religion" and Oasis with "Wonderwall". Radiohead gave us the self-loathing "Creep" while Guns 'N Roses rocked on with "November Rain". Who can forget Soundgarden, another Seattle based grunge band with their alt hit "Black Hole Sun" or the Goo Goo Dolls with their hit song "Slide". Some bands were one hit wonders like Blind Melon with "Rain" or Crash Test Dummies with "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm". Soul Asylum burst onto the scene with "Runaway Train" in 1993 while Collective Soul churned out hit after hit starting with "Shine".

Trends In Music For 2008

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Frank Zappa put it best when he said "Modern music is people who can't think signing artists who can't write songs to make records for people who can't hear".

But what happens when you cut out the "people who can't think"? The artist would become in direct contact with the individual, the record companies have to strictly enforce copyright to not lose their grasp, and new artists become a dime a dozen. Welcome to the future of music in 2008.

By now your 160gb mp3 player is probably starving for new music and with 2008 just starting you want to know who to watch and where to look. The truth is, no one can tell you who to watch and no one should, but we're going to show you where to look to find music you'll like instead of wasting your times with ones you won't.

Pandora - Dubbed the music genome project, Pandora allows you to type in an artist you like and then leads you to similar artists. This free streaming service will lead you from artist to artist as you let it know if it's going in the right direction or not.

Last.fm - If video killed the radio star, the internet brought it back. Last.fm allows anyone to create their own station and you have the opportunity to listen. Their search function allows you to find the artist or genre you're looking for and the similar tastes those people have.

We7 + Spiral Frog - Forget paying to download music, these services are funded by advertisements to give you the music for free. Keep your membership active and follow their guidelines any you'll be able to download this music to both your computer and mp3 player.

Last year, Radiohead released their CD "In Rainbows" through digital distribution on their website. The cost was completely to you under their "pay what you want" system that ran between October and December last year, because like the Eagles and Prince, Radiohead is without a contract and decided that they don't need one. Because of actions like this, expect album prices to go down, digital music sales to continue rising, and bands to compete for your attention at your price point in the upcoming year. When you can stream or download any song you want when you want onto your computer, mp3 player, or mobile device, purchasing a physical or digital album is voting with your money. Make that's one of the two votes you cast in 2008.

Top 20 Supremes Hits

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In 1959, an R&B female vocal group from Detroit got together and called themselves The Primettes. The group consisted of lead singer Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Barbara Martin.

They signed with the little known LuPine label in 1960. That same year, The Primettes signed with Motown's Tamla label and a year later, in 1961, The Primettes became known as The Supremes. Barbara Martin left soon thereafter, making the group a trio.

For three years, The Supremes worked as backing vocalists for other Motown artists. They can be heard backing Marvin Gaye on his 1963 hit, "Can I Get A Witness?"

Late in 1963, The Supremes cracked the Billboard Top 40 charts for the first time with "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes." Five of their next six singles went to number one. In all, they had twelve number one hits.

Although they were riding high on the charts, there was a lot of friction between Diana Ross and Florence Ballard. It all came to a head in 1967, when Motown boss, Berry Gordy, discharged Ballard and replaced her with Cindy Birdsong, who had been with Patti LaBalle's Bluebelles.

Diana Ross left the group in 1969 and was replaced by Jean Terrell. Ross had an extremely successful solo career, but The Supremes only managed to crack the top ten two more times. Their last charted single was in 1976.

In 1978, Mary Wilson reformed the group as Mary Wilson and The Supremes, but lost the rights to use the name The Supremes, following a tour in England.

Below are The Supremes twenty biggest hits, according to Billboard magazine.

1. Baby Love - 1964

2. Love Child - 1968

3. Where Did Our Love Go - 1964 - Donnie Elbert took this song to #15 on the weekly charts in 1971.

4. Come See About Me - 1964

5. You Can't Hurry Love - 1966 - In 1983, Phil Collins took a cover version of this song to #10.

6. Stop! In The Name Of Love - 1965

7. I Hear A Symphony - 1966

8. You Keep Me Hangin' On - 1966 - A psychedelic rock version of this song went to #6, by Vanilla Fudge, in 1968 and, twenty-one years after the original version, Kim Wilde also went to #1 in 1987.

9. Someday, We'll Be Together - 1969 - The Supremes last #1 song with Diana Ross and a very apropos title as their swan song.

10. Back In My Arms Again - 1965

11. Love Is Here And Now You're Gone - 1967

12. The Happening - 1967 - From the movie of the same title.

13. I'm Gonna Make You Love Me - 1969 - Here the Supremes teamed up with The Temptations, who, ironically, were called The Primes, when they first came to Motown and covered this Madeline Bell tune which went to #26 for her in 1968.

14. Reflections - 1967

15. My World Is Empty Without You - 1966

16. Stoned Love - 1970 - One of two songs for the Supremes that went top ten without Diana Ross on leads.

17. Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart - 1966

18. In And Out Of Love - 1967 - One of 17 top forty songs written by the team of Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland for the Supremes.

19. Up The Ladder To The Roof - 1970 - The first single for the Supremes after Diana Ross stepped down as lead singer.

20. I'm Livin' In Shame - 1969

On a sad note, Florence Ballard tried suing Motown over her being fired, but lost the suit. In 1976, after spending some time on welfare and trying to support her three children, Florence Ballard died of cardiac arrest at the age of 32.

The Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
