Country Music's Earliest Pioneers

Country Music as we know it has been around for decades, with the 1920's seen as the 'era' of Country; with thousands of faces, some well-known, some fading into obscurity lining the Hall of Fame, who are the important figureheads in the history of Country Music? Who pioneered it, we know and love today? Here are some of the founders:

A.C Robertson

Alexander (known as Eck) Robertson recorded the first commercial Country Music song in 1922! He was born in 1887 and lived in Texas, growing up learning to play the fiddle, he eventually found himself with a recording contract. In 1922 Eck recorded the now famous track "Sally Gooden." It never made it big, and it didn't sell many copies, but he began the industry we know today.

As the first ever recorded artist, Eck Robertson certainly deserves to be considered a pioneer.

Vernon Dalhart

Vernon Dalhart had the first Country Singer to have a nationwide hit in 1924 -just 2 years after Eck Robertson sang, with "Wreck of the Old '97." Vernon was born in 1883 as Marion try Slaughter, he took his name from two towns were he worked. He applied and was hired by Edison records, but he didn't start out as a Country Singer, he began with classical and dance, later in 1924 he released his first song which quickly became a hit. He went on to record many different hits, using various names, hundreds in fact!

While Vernon may have not begun his career, he certainly made an impact on the business, alerting recording companies to how lucrative it could be, for that and for singing the first country song to become a nationwide hit, Vernon Dalhart deserves his place in the pioneers.

Jimmie Rodgers

Jimmie Rodgers if often known as 'The Father of Country Music," he recorded "The Soldier's Sweetheart" and "Sleep, Baby, Sleep" in 1927 and although they didn't make millions, they did achieve some success and fame. But Jimmie was determined to make it big and recorded another song 'Blue Yodel" or "T for Texas" as it is often known. This song earned him his stardom, selling hundreds of thousands of copies.

Jimmie Rodgers made a good career for himself out of singing Country, and influenced many artists, Country and non country alike; sadly he died at 35 years old from TB. For his contribution, Jimmie Rodgers earned his place among the pioneers of Music.

The Carter Family

The Carter Family was a group that recorded in the late 1920s to the late 1950s, they are considered to be the first Country vocal group, in the group was Delaney Carter, his wife Sarah Carter and his sister-in-law Maybelle Carter.

They made their first recording in 1927 with "Wandering Boy" and "Poor Orphan Child," later they created the well known, "Keep On the Sunny Side," and many more besides. Their songs became very popular and very well known.

Later though the group disbanded and split, with Maybelle singing with her children and occasionally the group re-uniting to sing a hit, merging with several family generations.

The Carter Family's songs have been covered by artists such as Joan Baez and even Bob Dylan, but as important as the songs were, the Carter Family pioneered a new way of playing the guitar the "Carter Style." With such influence on the world, the Carter Family deserves their place as an early pioneer.

It has a long history spanning decades, and these among other later pioneers have created the wonderful world of this music that we know today, they deserve their place in Country Music history.

Baby Boomer Music - Top Ten One Hit Wonders From the '60s

We loved them all. Several "One Hit Wonders" had very successful songs throughout the '60s. Hey, how could you not shed a tear every time you hear, "Who Put the Bomp in the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp, Bomp, Bomp?" Maybe even two or three tears, huh?

Well, as the Baby Boomer Music King, I have my own very valuable Top Ten list of One Hit Wonders. Remember these?

10. "In the Year 2525″ (1969) by Zager and Evans - These two University of Nebraska students hit #1 in the summer of 1969 and stayed there for six weeks. Over time this single has sold over 10 million copies. The two remain friends to this day. Denny Zager still lives in Lincoln where he builds custom guitars.

9. "Do You Love Me" (1962) by The Contours - Four young men from Detroit got their start in 1959 and did not chart with their first two releases. But they hit it big in 1962 when "Do You love Me" went all the way to #2. The group played for several more years but never hit star status as members came and went like a revolving door.

8. "Rhythm of the Rain" (1963) by the Cascades - All four band members served on the USS Ticonderoga while in the Navy. After leaving the Navy the four formed a group and began creating songs with an emphasis on voice harmony. Two releases did nothing, but then came "Rhythm of the Rain" which rose to #3 in early 1963. * (Make sure you watch the Cascades do an updated version of "Rhythm of the Rain" from a few years ago. It sounds better than the original.)

7. "Who Put the Bomp" (1961) by Barry Mann - Barry's song peaked at #7 and stayed on the charts for twelve weeks.

6. "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" (1965) by Jonathan King - He was a singer songwriter and a Cambridge University undergraduate in 1965 when he released his one hit wonder. It was a world wide hit that sold over 4 million copies. King is still in the music business after writing several songs for other entertainers for years.

There were many others that did well during the 60's. One Hit Wonders carved out their share of music history and often climbed to #1 on the Billboard listings.

"Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey" by Steam went #1 as did "Telstar" by the Tornadoes. There are several great songs that I wanted to add to this Top Ten but that would have made the list a Top Twenty.

So, here are the Top Five One Hit Wonders from the 60's.

5. "Liar Liar" (1965) by The Castaways - This rock group originated in the Minneapolis-St Paul area and released "Liar Liar" in 1965. The song hit #12 and was eventually featured in the movie "Good Morning Vietnam." The group is still playing with one of the original members.

4. "In-a-Godda-Da-Vita" (1968) by Iron Butterfly - This song was actually recorded on the first take which is almost hard to believe. The original 17 minute version has a great extended drum solo. The song developed a cult following and sold several million copies.

3. "For What Its Worth" (1967) by Buffalo Springfield - Steven Stills and Neil Young became big stars with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (CSNY) but they were one hit wonders as part of Buffalo Springfield.

2. "Hey! Baby" (1962) by Bruce Channel - Although recorded in 1960, "Hey! Baby" didn't become a hit until 1962 when it shot all the way to #1. Bruce Channel is still in the music business to this day even though he only hit it big time with one song. "Hey! Baby" has had a rebirth of sorts as a favorite among college students throughout the country.

1. I have a tie for the top spot... "Hippy Hippy Shakes" by the Swinging Blue Jeans (featured in the movie "Cocktail"), and "San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie. Listen to both songs and tell me which one should sit by itself at the top.

The Internet has impacted all of the arts, but no sector has been hit quite as hard as the music industry. With CD sales fading and radio play shrinking, recording artists are finding less opportunities to get their music heard. To survive, many musicians are becoming brands in the service of brands. The industry is in such a free fall that advertising avenues are filling the shoes that music labels once did. During most of rock's history melding music in the service of a product was anathema. But this is a very different world; in the past musicians and record labels could make a good living off of selling records and CDs. An artist didn't have to sell his or her music to an advertiser or TV show to turn a profit. But with the advent of Napster and subsequent sites, the days of platinum and double platinum record sales are quickly fading.

Now most bands make their money off of touring, merchandising and yes, melding their music with products. Lady GaGa's Bad Romance is a product placement wet dream come true. The video is filled with brands galore. But she's not the only one going down that road; everyone from Iggy Pop to Velvet Revolver to Depeche Mode has cut deals with products and brands. Although Steve Jobs helped to put some life back into music with iTunes as a way to generate revenue, it's a far cry from where things stood in the '60s, '70s, or '80s. As the industry shifts, artists have to rethink their approach and their career paths.

The downside is that labels are no longer there with the famed A&R reps grabbing bands off the streets and turning them into stars (not that it was ever that common an occurrence to begin with). The upside is that there is now more of a level playing field. Via the same Internet that broke the old music model, singers, bands and musicians are discovering new models and approaches. The traditional opportunities of the record label's star building machine aren't as great as they were when Cream, the Stones, Madonna or the Chile Peppers initially made their marks. The music world is shifting, but as one door closes others open. To those artists who are willing to embrace change, new and exciting avenues and business models are appearing. Via the net, more artists have an opportunity to get known and develop a career. But, it has become more of a do- it-yourself world. Musicians who learn social media, blogging, and traditional PR will continue to build a buzz, establish a presence and create a fan base. Those artists who embrace change will still find ways to succeed, make an impact and build lasting careers.

Hit Songwriting in Six Easy Steps

Hit songwriting in pop music has become increasingly easier to predict by music industry insiders and music fans alike. Not too long ago, in pop music, there was a wide variety of musical tastes by major labels, and no one could really put a finger on which song would be a sure hit.

Pop hit songwriting these days usually consists of nothing but a good beat with pasted-on lyrics to them in the verses with very little focus, and very singable choruses to hook the listeners. Mix in a well-known rapper on some of these songs and voila, a hit! If you're not into music production or beat making, there are many awesome beat-makers out there willing to either collaborate or sell their beats at a fairly modest price.

Here's how to write a hit song in today's pop music market:

1. Focus first on who will be singing the song and what style it'll be whether it's in pop, r&b, rock, etc. Decide what you want your song to be about and pick a song title(you don't have to re-invent the wheel), i.e., "I Need You," (self-explanatory) "Whatever" (a song about - you're not going to change your mind about something) "Far Away," (a song about - I wish you were here with me), etc. Hit songwriting titles these days tend to use one to three words in the title, i.e., "Disturbia," "Closer."

2. Create or buy an awesome beat for the song if it's in r&b or most types of pop, and if it's a song with a much more "live" feel wait until the next step (3) before proceeding.

3. Create an original strong, singable hook that you can't get out of your mind after hearing it a few times. If you can't come up with this, chances are you will not have a hit song. Once you do have a strong hook, proceed to (4).

4. Write decent verses. If you really want to stand out, take the time to craft some awesome verses!

5. Make sure your song has no empty spaces in it. Even if you're playing it on guitar or piano, create fills and riffs to bracket the vocals. Pop songs today have NO empty spaces. The music is more intense and "in your face" than ever.

6. If you believe your song has the potential to be a hit, test out the song or songs on your friends and family members who listen to pop radio. Their reaction is usually the right one!
